Last updated: October 23, 2026. Meta Help Center references checked October 22 to 23, 2026. Ads Manager options roll out unevenly, so your account may show different labels.
TL;DR
The types of Facebook ads come down to two separate choices that people often mix up: the campaign objective and the ad format. The objective (Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App Promotion or Sales) tells Meta which result to optimize for, while the format (image, video, carousel or collection, sometimes opening an Instant Experience) decides how the ad looks. Choose the objective first, because it controls which formats Ads Manager will let you use.
Quick definitions
Campaign objective: the business result you want Meta's delivery system to chase, chosen at campaign level. Ad format: the layout of the ad and how many images or videos it holds, chosen at ad level. Placement: the surface where the ad appears, such as Facebook Feed, Reels, Stories, Marketplace, Threads or Audience Network (Meta's network of third-party apps and sites), set at ad set level.
This guide is for advertisers who are about to build a campaign in Meta Ads Manager and want to know which ad types exist and which one to pick. It does not walk through setup click by click. For that, start with our complete guide to setting up Meta ads.

Every Facebook ad combines one of six campaign objectives with a creative format, and runs in one or more placements. Meta's own compatibility reference checks five creative options: image, video, carousel, collection and Instant Experience, a full-screen mobile page that opens from the ad. Reels, Stories, Messenger and Threads are where an ad runs or where the conversation happens, not formats.
There is no single correct count of "formats," because the answer depends on what you mean. People use the word for creation choices in Ads Manager, for the layout a viewer sees, for full-screen experiences, for objective setups like lead ads, and even for placements. Most "types of Facebook ads" lists mix all of these in one flat list, which is where the confusion starts.
Where each choice lives in Ads Manager
| Choice | Level in Ads Manager | Question it answers | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Objective | Campaign | What result should Meta optimize for? | Sales, Leads, Awareness |
| Placement | Ad set | Where can the ad appear? | Feed, Reels, Stories, Marketplace, Threads |
| Format | Ad | What does the ad look like? | Image, video, carousel, collection |
CAMPAIGN Objective ........ what Meta optimizes for (Sales, Leads, Awareness...)
|
AD SET Conversion location + performance goal + placements
| (website, Instant Form, messaging app, calls, app;
| Feed, Reels, Stories, Marketplace, Threads...)
|
AD Format / creative ... image, video, carousel, collection,
optional Instant ExperienceWe call the decision logic the Three-Choice Stack: objective first, then format and placement as a pair. This is a decision order, not the order of screens. Ads Manager asks for placements at the ad set before you build the ad, and format and placement constrain each other, since a vertical Reels placement needs creative that fits it.
The objective still comes first because it narrows everything below it. According to Meta's format compatibility reference (accessed October 22, 2026), the objective you choose determines which formats and which Meta platforms are available.
Getting this right likely matters more as Meta inventory gets pricier. In its Q2 2026 results, Meta reported that average price per ad rose 12% year over year across its Family of Apps, while ad impressions rose 14%. That figure covers Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads together, not Facebook alone.
Which Facebook ad formats exist in 2026?
In 2026 the core Ads Manager formats are single image or video, carousel and collection, with Instant Experience as a full-screen add-on. Many accounts now load several assets into one ad as a multi-media ad, and Meta may render extra layouts through Format display options. Everything else you see in "Facebook ad types" lists is a placement, a conversion location or an objective setup, which is why the table shows what Meta actually calls each one.
Facebook ad types: what Meta actually calls each one
| Ad type people search for | What Meta calls it | Where it is set | Best for | What usually breaks | Where to go deeper |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Image ad | Format (single image or video) | Ad | Simple offers, fast testing, retargeting | Tends to fatigue faster at high frequency | This article |
| Video ad | Format (single image or video, slideshow included) | Ad | Demos, storytelling, video-view audiences | Weak first three seconds, wrong aspect ratio | Meta video ad scripts |
| Multi-media ad | Creative workflow inside single image or video that holds several images and videos in one ad | Ad | Accounts with many assets and little time to test | Availability varies by account; reported not to combine with carousel or collection | Dynamic creative optimization |
| Carousel ad | Format (2+ cards, each with its own headline, link and CTA), or a layout Meta generates | Ad | Several products, step-by-step stories | Card one carries the ad; later cards often get little attention | Dynamic creative optimization |
| Collection ad | Display layout (cover image or video plus a product row); in many accounts chosen under Format display options | Ad | Mobile shopping | Usually needs product or catalog assets; not available for App Promotion | Meta catalog ad automation |
| Instant Experience | Full-screen mobile destination opened from image, video, carousel or collection ads | Ad | Mobile storytelling without a slow landing page | Since June 2025 it no longer counts as a landing page view | This article |
| Reels ad | Placement (Facebook and Instagram Reels) | Ad set | Vertical, sound-on video | Horizontal assets get cropped or look out of place | Facebook Reels ads |
| Stories ad | Placement (Facebook and Instagram Stories) | Ad set | Full-screen, short attention moments | Text hidden under the interface | Facebook ad placements |
| Click-to-message ad | Messaging destination (Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp) under Engagement, Leads, Traffic or Sales | Ad set and ad | Conversations, quotes, bookings | Slow replies; conversations counted as results even when few buy | This article |
| Instant Form lead ad | Leads objective with an Instant Form as the conversion location | Ad set and ad | Fast lead capture without a website | Cheap leads that sales cannot reach | Facebook lead ads |
| Catalog ad (dynamic product ad) | Catalog-driven Sales setup (Advantage+ catalog ads) | Campaign, ad set and ad | Retargeting and prospecting across many SKUs | Feed sync errors, out-of-stock items still showing | Meta catalog ad automation |
The "what usually breaks" column reflects patterns AdAdvisor's team tends to see in the accounts it manages, not Meta guidance, so treat it as a checklist rather than a rule. "Lead ad" is also used loosely for any Leads campaign; the Leads objective can just as well send people to a website, a chat or a phone call. For the detailed pages, see Facebook Reels ads, Facebook lead ads, Meta catalog ad automation, Meta video ad scripts and dynamic creative optimization.
What happened to the Flexible ad format?
Flexible, which let Meta pick between single image, video or carousel from up to 10 assets, is disappearing from Ad setup in many accounts. Meta's Flexible format page (accessed October 23, 2026) now says the feature "may not be available to you" and points advertisers to multi-media ads instead. Meta does not give a single date on the live page, so expect the change to reach accounts at different times.
Collection is moving too. Meta's ad format page says that while collection "may no longer appear for you in Ad setup, you can still select it in Ad creative, under Format display options", which Meta describes as creative automation that lets ads appear in additional formats depending on objective and media setup. Separately, Meta's Instant Experience page states: "Starting in June 2025, Instant Experiences will no longer count as a landing page view."
What are the 6 Facebook campaign objectives?
Meta has six campaign objectives in 2026: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App Promotion and Sales. Meta calls them "simplified objectives" because they replaced the older, longer list such as Brand awareness, Reach, Conversions, Messages and Catalog sales. Meta's objective guide maps each old objective to its new home.
Meta's six campaign objectives and the formats each allows
| Objective | Use it when you want | Older objectives it replaced | Creative options per Meta's compatibility page | Main exception |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Reach and ad recall | Brand awareness, Reach, Video views, Store traffic | All five | ThruPlay and 2-second video goals allow only image, video and carousel |
| Traffic | Visits to a site, app, Page or chat | Traffic | All five | None listed by Meta |
| Engagement | Messages, video views, post engagement, Page likes, event responses | Engagement, Video views, Messages, Conversions | All five only with a website or app | Messaging apps, calls and reminders allow image, video and carousel; post engagement, event responses, Page likes and group clicks allow image and video; video views allow video only |
| Leads | Form fills, calls, chats, sign-ups | Lead generation, Messages, Conversions | All five with a website or app | Instant Forms, Messenger, Instagram and Calls allow image, video and carousel only |
| App Promotion | Installs and in-app actions | App installs | Image, video, carousel, Instant Experience | No collection; no WhatsApp |
| Sales | Purchases and other conversion events | Conversions, Catalog sales | All five with a website, or with an app | Website and app combined allows image and video only; messaging apps and calls allow image, video and carousel; catalog sales allows Instant Experience only with collection |
"All five" means image, video, carousel, collection and Instant Experience, the five options Meta's compatibility page checks against. That page also says all six objectives support Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network, and five of the six support WhatsApp, with App Promotion as the exception. Options still depend on conversion location, performance goal and your account's rollout, so confirm in Ads Manager before you brief creative.
Why is a Facebook ad format greyed out?
A greyed-out format is usually an objective or conversion-location mismatch, not a bug. If you pick Leads with an Instant Form, collection and Instant Experience disappear because Meta does not support them there. Ads Manager may also show error code 1815159 when the format does not match the objective and settings, as Meta's compatibility page explains.
Work through it in this order:
- Check the objective, conversion location and performance goal against the table above.
- Confirm your media setup supports the output you want (manual upload, multi-media or catalog).
- Look under Format display options in Ad creative, where collection now sits in many accounts.
- Check that the creative fits the placements you kept, especially vertical placements.
- If the ad was duplicated from an older Flexible or dynamic creative setup, building a fresh ad often clears the conflict.
Is a placement the same as an ad format?
No. A placement is where the ad appears, and the format is what the ad looks like. One carousel ad can run in Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Stories, Marketplace and Threads at the same time where placement compatibility allows, and each surface renders it slightly differently. Reels and Stories feel like formats because they favor vertical video, but in Ads Manager they are placements you include or leave to Advantage+ placements.
Objective, format and placement: common mix-ups
| You are choosing | Example of a wrong mix-up | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | "I want to run Reels ads" | Choose the result first (for example, Sales), then let Reels be one placement |
| Format | "Lead ads are a format" | An Instant Form lead ad is the Leads objective plus a form; the format is still image, video or carousel |
| Placement | "Carousel ads only run in Feed" | A carousel can serve across several placements if the objective allows it |
WhatsApp shows up in both roles, which adds to the confusion. A click-to-WhatsApp ad uses WhatsApp as a messaging destination, while WhatsApp Status is a placement inside WhatsApp itself. Meta's dynamic creative page notes that Advantage+ placements automatically include WhatsApp Status, though availability may depend on your account and market.
Threads is one of the most recent placements to open up. On January 21, 2026, Meta announced it would expand ads on Threads to all users and markets, with Threads placements added automatically to Advantage+ and manual campaigns. TechCrunch reported that the rollout would be gradual and could take months, so availability may still vary by account.
Placement strategy, including when to override Advantage+ placements, has its own page: Advantage+ placements vs manual placements. For one surface in depth, see Facebook Marketplace ads.
Facebook campaign examples: which type fits your business?
The right Facebook ad type depends on the result you are paying for, so examples are easiest to read objective first. The combinations below are common starting points, not fixed rules. Results will likely vary with your offer, tracking quality and budget.
Facebook campaign examples by business type
| Business situation | Objective | Conversion location | Format to start with | Why it tends to work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ecommerce store launching a product | Sales | Website | Video or a multi-media ad | Lets Meta optimize for purchases while you learn which creative lands |
| Ecommerce store with a large catalog | Sales | Catalog sales | Carousel or collection | Pulls the right products per person from the feed |
| Local service business (dentist, roofer) | Leads | Instant Forms or Calls | Image or video | Low-friction contact; collection and Instant Experience are not available with forms |
| B2B or high-ticket service | Leads | Website | Video | Website leads can use every format and are often easier to qualify with site analytics and CRM data |
| Coach or course seller who sells in DMs | Engagement or Leads | Messaging apps | Image, video or carousel | Starts a conversation where the sale actually happens |
| Mobile app | App Promotion | App | Video or Instant Experience | Collection is not supported for this objective |
| New brand or new location | Awareness | On the ad | Video or image | Optimizes for reach and recall before you ask for a click |
If your campaign does not fit any row, go back to the objective column and ask which single result would justify the spend. For the setup steps that follow this choice, see how to use Meta Ads Manager.
What does Meta's AI choose for you?
Meta now automates parts of the format and placement choice, but it does not choose your objective. You still decide what result to pay for. Within that choice, several automation layers can change what people see:
- Multi-media ads and Format display options let you load several images and videos into one ad, then let Meta show them in additional formats, such as carousel or collection, where the objective and media setup allow.
- Advantage+ creative applies enhancements such as music, overlays, text variations and image touch-ups. Meta's Advantage+ creative page says some enhancements may be on by default and can be turned off.
- Dynamic creative mixes the images, videos, headlines and descriptions you upload into variations at ad set level. Meta's dynamic creative page says that since June 2024 you "may no longer be able to use" it on new Sales or App Promotion ad sets; our dynamic creative optimization guide covers what replaced it.
- Advantage+ catalog ads build product ads from your catalog rather than from assets you upload.
- Advantage+ sales campaigns, still often called by their earlier name, Advantage+ shopping campaigns, are Meta's automated setup for the Sales objective. Meta's Advantage+ sales campaign page says its most advanced optimizations switch on when the campaign uses Advantage+ audience, placement and budget. Our Meta Advantage+ guide covers the Advantage+ products, and Meta Ads updates 2026 tracks the changes.
The honest limit is scope. These tools optimize inside a campaign you already set up, so a wrong objective or a weak offer usually stays wrong, just delivered more efficiently. Account-level decisions, such as which campaigns to launch, pause or fund next, still sit with a person or with an agent that operates the whole account, like Nova, AdAdvisor's approval-based AI media buyer. AdAdvisor brings more than 8 years in media buying, over $60M in managed ad spend, and an ex-Meta engineer on the team.
Frequently asked questions about types of Facebook ads
Summary
The types of Facebook ads are best understood as three linked choices: objective, format and placement. Pick the objective that matches the result you are paying for, then choose a format and placements that objective supports. When a format seems missing, the objective, the conversion location or your account's rollout is usually the reason.
